<image:caption>Meet Ramneet Kaur, a Ph.D. student in Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University, conducting her research at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center in Lubbock. Originally from Punjab, India, she grew up in a farming family whose resilience and optimism taught her to appreciate the dedication behind every harvest. Witnessing firsthand the challenges farmers face, especially with changing weather and soil conditions, sparked her lifelong commitment to making agriculture more sustainable and resilient. She earned her B.Sc. in Agriculture (Hons.) from Khalsa College, Amritsar, and her M.Sc. in Soil Science from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. During her master’s research, she worked on improving nitrogen fertilizer management in direct-seeded rice using a leaf color chart, helping farmers optimize fertilizer use while protecting the environment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Today, Ramneet’s Ph.D. research focuses on developing sustainable and resilient sorghum–cotton cropping systems for the semi-arid regions of the Texas Great Plains. She studies how regenerative practices like no-tillage and crop rotation influence soil health, water retention, and greenhouse gas emissions under both dryland and irrigated systems. Her goal is to design economically viable and environmentally sustainable cropping systems that conserve water, enhance soil vitality, and strengthen the resilience of semi-arid agriculture. Ramneet hopes to join the agriculture-based industry, where she can combine her field-based research expertise with innovation to support sustainable soil and crop management on a larger scale.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After graduating in 2022, with a Bachelor's in Agriculture, majoring in Animal Science, accompanied by a minor in Science Communication, from Murdoch University in Western Australia, Kaitlyn landed her dream job as an Agricultural Research and Extension Coordinator for the Facey Group, a small non-for-profit farmer cooperative research organization in the remote town of Wickepin, Western Australia. This broad-acre dryland mixed operation farming community produces small grains, such as wheat, barley, and oats, integrated with livestock, predominantly sheep, with an average of just 15 inches of rainfall during the growing season.</image:caption>

<image:title>Highlights - Spotlight: Kaitlyn Anderson</image:title>
<image:caption>Working closely with local farmers, Kaitlyn delivered practical, region-specific research focused on whole-system drought mitigation strategies and improving nitrogen efficiency through the implementation of novel legumes. She thrived in the fast-paced environment, designing and managing multiple farm-scale trials and extension projects. Her time at Facey Group has been instrumental in shaping her collaborative approach to agricultural research and deepening her passion for stakeholder engagement and science communication. Driven by a passion to move science beyond research journals and into the hands of farmers in ways that are both effective and engaging, Kaitlyn moved to Lubbock, Texas, to pursue a Master’s in Agricultural Communication at Texas Tech University. From the start, her goal was clear: to improve how agricultural science is communicated so it reaches those who need it most, in a form they value and can apply. Accompanying her studies at Texas Tech University, Kaitlyn works as a Graduate Research Assistant with the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Lubbock. She has contributed to the development of extension materials and analyzed workshop evaluations to enhance producer education efforts, while the research and extension center supports her thesis research.</image:caption>

<image:title>Highlights - Spotlight: Kaitlyn Anderson</image:title>
<image:caption>While farmers remain at the heart of her motivations and values, Kaitlyn acknowledges the broader system in which they operate, one shaped by institutions, policies, and knowledge networks that influence their ability to adapt and thrive. Supporting farmers means looking beyond the farm gate to address the larger structures that drive agricultural progress. Her master’s research on extension agents’ motivations to share and seek information has begun to unpack these dynamics. County extension agents are a vital resource for Texas farmers, and it is essential to equip them with the tools, training, and support they need to be effective educators and advocates. Strengthening their capacity ultimately strengthens the farmers they serve, helping them reach both the operational and personal goals. As she begins her PhD in Agricultural Communication and Education at Texas Tech, Kaitlyn is committed to improving how science is communicated and flows among institutions, media, policymakers, and farmers, ensuring farmers have the knowledge and information they need to make informed decisions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Noelia Curbelo-Lopez is originally from Puerto Rico, the small mountain town of Jayuya. She comes from a family of coffee growers and has a strong background in agronomy. Noelia earned her bachelor's degree in agronomy with a soil science focus from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM). During her undergraduate studies, she worked at the Soil Fertility and Quality Laboratory at UPRM and conducted research focused on validating a rapid procedure for measuring ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate in soil and water extracts. She also gained experience at North Dakota State University, working in the Soil Reclamation Laboratory on the characterization of biopolymers for soil remediation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Highlights - Spotlight: Noelia Curbelo-Lopez</image:title>
<image:caption>Currently, Noelia is pursuing a master's degree in Plant and Soil Science with a concentration in soil science at Texas Tech University. Her research focuses on integrating nitrification inhibitors with manure in cotton systems to mitigate nitrous oxide emissions. While manure provides numerous benefits to soil health, its sudden addition of labile carbon can stimulate microbial activity and increase greenhouse gas emissions—particularly nitrous oxide. As a potent greenhouse gas and a major contributor to global warming, nitrous oxide also represents a loss of nitrogen, one of agriculture’s most limiting nutrients. Noelia’s research aims to optimize the use of manure to retain its agronomic benefits while minimizing its environmental impact.</image:caption>

<image:title>Highlights - Spotlight: Chris Cobos</image:title>
<image:caption>Chris graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2015 with his B.S. in Wildlife Biology. His undergraduate research focused on the antimicrobial properties of plant secondary metabolites. After graduation, Chris worked at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy in Amarillo, TX researching the role of human endothelial cells and cytokines on tumor angiogenesis and growth through the TTUHSC Biomedical Research Internship. From there, Chris started his M.S. in Plant and Soil Sciences at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. He graduated from TTU in 2018 after successfully defending his thesis, “The developmental biology and biochemistry of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) testa and its role in Aspergillus resistance”. In 2019, Chris worked for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Texas Tech University working on gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy of various plant and animal sterols.</image:caption>

<image:title>Highlights - Spotlight: Chris Cobos</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2021, Chris started his Ph.D. in Soil Science at Texas A&M University under Dr. Katie Lewis. Currently, his research focuses on optimizing soil water conservation and soil health properties of semi-arid regenerative cotton cropping systems. “My research focuses on soil water dynamics in semi-arid agricultural conservation systems, specifically in dryland or deficit-irrigated production systems. The project goal is to (1) gain a better understanding of water availability over time with different conservation management practices in cotton production across the High Plains of Texas and (2) evaluate the sustainability of these practices under projected climate changes to forecast community socioeconomic vitality in the future. Understanding and continuing research on dryland production systems across the High Plains of Texas remains one of the most pivotal issues in regional agricultural production. Research outcomes can be translated to semi-arid environments globally to increase agricultural intensification with increasingly limited water resources. This is paramount to meet the agricultural demands of a growing global population in the face of an increasingly harsh climate and environment.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Highlights - Spotlight: Chris Cobos</image:title>
<image:caption>“Exposure to the nuances and issues that agricultural producers face across the semi-arid High Plains of Texas has fostered a curiosity and passion for dryland and water conservation research that I plan to pursue in my career. Incorporating a systems-approach to conservation agriculture research is essential in determining applicable solutions to water and cropping systems sustainability. I plan to continue in this field with the mindset of coupling soil and agronomic field research with ecological, climate, and econometric models to determine the current status of sustainability and success of agricultural systems while forecasting that success into the future under varying climate and economic conditions. Field and laboratory exploration are as critical to the success of research as communicating and helping provide solutions to the producers who will ultimately be dependent on their implementation. With this in mind, I would love opportunities to not only explore my research interests but communicate data in Extension or teaching roles as well, continuing my progress in becoming a leader for agricultural research and sustainability in dryland agroecosystems and water conservation.”</image:caption>

Here we see Dr. Burke, Tessa, and Riley posing in front of the Capital Building, one of many landmarks we made stops at. <image:caption>Figure 2: The normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) for Dawson County from January 2021 to March 2022. NDMI is used to determine vegetation water content and monitor droughts. The value range of the NDMI is -1 to 1. Negative values of NDMI (values approaching -1; indicated in red) correspond to barren soil. Values around zero (-0.2 to 0.4; indicated in green) generally correspond to water stress. High, positive values represent high canopy without water stress (approximately 0.4 to 1; indicated in blue).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Figure 3: The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for Dawson County from January 2021 to March 2022. NDVI is a simple, but effective index for quantifying green vegetation. It is a measure of the state of vegetation health based on how plants reflect light at certain wavelengths. The value range of the NDVI is -1 to 1. Negative values of NDVI (values approaching -1; indicated in black) correspond to water. Values close to zero (-0.1 to 0.1; indicated in white) generally correspond to barren areas of rock, sand, or snow. Low, positive values represent shrub and grassland (approximately 0.2 to 0.4; indicated in light green), while high values indicate temperate and tropical rainforests (values approaching 1; indicated in dark green). In the figure above, values approaching 1 can generally be attributed to annual cotton crops across the county.</image:caption>

<image:title>Amee - Ph.D. Student and Research Associate</image:title>
<image:caption>Howdy, I received my M.S. in Soil Fertility from Texas Tech University in 2018 and completed my B.S. in Plant and Environmental Soil Science from Texas A&M University in 2016. My masters research focused on soil potassium effects on cotton growth, yield and quality in the Texas High Plains. Currently I am a PhD candidate at Texas Tech University and a Research Associate at Texas A&M AgriLife Research in the Soil Fertility and Chemistry Lab run by Dr. Katie Lewis in Lubbock, TX. My current research focuses on optimizing fertilizer management and irrigation in cotton cropping systems. My research focuses on soil nitrogen, normalized difference vegetative index, reniform nematode analysis, plant N determination and nitrogen use efficiency calculations. I expect to graduate in August 2022 with hopes of continuing research in soil fertility at the university level. I have received the Dow AgroSciences Graduate Fellowship from 2016 to 2021, the West Texas Agricultural Chemical Institute scholarship in 2017 and 2020, the Helen DeVitt Jones part-time graduate fellowship in 2019 and 2020 and the Fern Lee “Missy” Finck graduate scholarship in 2021.</image:caption>

<image:title>Nicholas - M.S. Student</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m Nick Boogades from Edgewater, Maryland and I’m a first year master’s student at Texas A&M under Dr. Lewis. I received my bachelor’s degree in environmental and soil sciences, along with minors in plant science and water management, from the University of Tennessee. During my time as an undergraduate I participated in soil judging, turf grass research and track & field. My travels while participating in athletics are what first sparked my interest in coming to Texas to pursue a master’s degree. We travelled to Texas several times for competition; twice to Texas A&M, and once to Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX. On that trip to Lubbock, it happened that the cotton fields we flew over as we landed at the airport would be the same fields I’d have the pleasure of conducting research in, less than two years later. My research focuses on soil health parameters in organic cotton and peanut production and compares them to conventional systems. In this project we investigate differences in soil enzyme activity, microbial community structure, greenhouse gas emissions and yield, among other factors, between the two systems and over time. Although early in my time as a master’s student, I have an interest in enzymes, their role in nutrient cycling and organic matter breakdown, and the changes in enzymes under different management practices. In the end, I hope my contributions will benefit farmers and the environment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tessa - Research Assistant and M.S. Student</image:title>
<image:caption>Tessa Bennett is a first year master’s student at Texas Tech University under Dr. Lewis. She recently moved from Tifton, Georgia. In Tifton, she received her bachelor’s degree in crop and soil science (Magna Cum Laude) from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. During her time as an undergraduate, she was employed by the University of Georgia campus in Tifton. There she assisted in research with tobacco, corn and small grains, and soil fertility. She attended many agronomy club meetings that aided in solidifying her interest in agricultural research. Her employment with UGA research intrigued her to want to continue her education in agricultural research, along with her internship spent as a crop scout for HolderAg Consulting in Ashburn, Georgia. She wanted to broaden her understanding on different agricultural practices by moving to and obtaining a degree in West Texas. Through this experience, she hopes to gain more experience and knowledge on sustainable crop and soil management.</image:caption>

<image:title>KC - Research Assistant and M.S. Student</image:title>
<image:caption>Katie Cason is a research assistant and first year master’s student at Texas Tech University under Dr. Lewis. She graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor's degree in plant and environmental soil science with a crop emphasis. During her time at Texas A&M, she was employed by the Texas A&M Cotton Improvement Lab, where she assisted in research and received hands-on experience with crop production and plant breeding. She also conducted an undergraduate individual research project in this program, where she got to look at the phenotypic distribution for short fiber content, length perimeters, and fiber bundle strength following one generation of single plant selection for high or low short fiber content. While she completed her research, her passion for her study in crop production was established. She decided to pursue a career and further her education. She will be completing a master’s degree in plant and soil science with a concentration in soil science.</image:caption>
